Dupont Circle history

Until after the Civil War, most of Dupont Circle was underdeveloped, and many of the neighborhood’s row houses and mansions were built before 1900. Before the fountain was built in 1920, the traffic circle used to hold a memorial statue of Civil War Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, which is where the neighborhood received its name. Sunny days are perfect for a picnic lunch at the Dupont Circle Fountain or on 22nd Street’s Spanish Steps.
