Getting around: Transportation in Dupont Circle
Taking the Red Line to the Dupont Circle Station is the most direct and convenient way to commute to Dupont Circle. The main bus routes serving the area include the G2 along P Street, the L2 which travels 18th Street, and the 42 which connects Chinatown and Mount Pleasant. Commuters can also catch the D.C. Circulator to Georgetown and Rosslyn every ten minutes from the corner of 19th and N Streets.

Until after the Civil War, most of Dupont Circle was underdeveloped, and many of the neighborhood’s row houses and mansions were built before 1900. Before the fountain was built in 1920, the traffic circle used to hold a memorial statue of Civil War Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, which is where the neighborhood received its name.
