Originally, the area now known as Cobb County was Cherokee Indian country. The Georgia General Assembly founded Cobb County along with a few other counties on Dec. 3, 1832. Cobb County is named after U.S. Representative and Senator Thomas Willis Cobb. Two years later, the county got its county seat, Marietta, which is still the largest city in Cobb. Marietta is named after Thomas Cobb’s wife, Mary.

In 1942 the establishment of Bell Aircraft’s Marietta branch drove investment in the aerospace sector. Eventually, the plant provided jobs for more than 28,000 people. After World War II, the plant closed, but it opened again during the Korean War. The Air Force took over, establishing Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Lockheed Marietta became a top producer of military transport planes.

The 1990s and 2000s brought gentrification and increasingly varied demographics to Cobb County. Immigrants from Russia, Bosnia, China, India, Brazil, and Mexico moved to Cobb, providing the region with increased diversity.
