    Get to Know Greenpoint

Greenpoint, part of New York’s 12th congressional district, appeals to both traditional and contemporary tastes. It’s full of businesses that have been around forever, but gentrification and increasing bohemian population have changed the character of the neighborhood and brought new businesses into the limelight. For example, shoppers can find a number of boutiques and shops run by local designers or hit up J. Crew and Urban Outfitters.

Greenpoint used to be farmland, and now neighborhood’s streets are named after farm owner’s surnames—for example, Meserole and Calyer. Most of the population is working class, and it’s common to find multiple generations of the same family living in one area. The neighborhood is also a popular destination for immigrants.

The Greenpoint Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The neighborhood’s largest green space is McCarren Park; two other parks are MCGolrick Park and WNYC Transmitter Park. The neighborhood is home to several pieces of architectural interest, including the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, the oldest church in Greenpoint; the Eberhard-Faber Pencil Factory; and the Oliver H. Perry School, which is the oldest continuously operating public school in New York City.

Residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of open-mic nights, poetry readings and pop-up art exhibitions or explore the Greenpoint Gallery, an area for artists to work and display their pieces.
