Plano at a Glance

Located within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Plano, Texas is home to a variety of big name corporations, including: Alliance Data, Cinemark Theatres, Dell Services, Ericsson, Frito-Lay, HP Enterprise Services, Pizza Hut, Rent-A-Center, Siemens and more. While population growth in Plano remained stagnant for years, starting in the early 1970s the city experienced a significant increase. Aiding in this population growth were a series of public works projects and tax changes removing the farming community from the town. Between 1970 and 1980, Plano’s population increased by over 50,000 and thanks to relatively flat topography, the city’s grid layout as well as some highly efficient planning initiatives—sewers, schools and street development kept up with this quickly growing population. By the 1980s, a number of major corporations had moved their headquarters to Plano, resulting in further growth and development. By 1990, the population had grown by another 50,000, making Plano larger (population-wise) than McKinney, Texas—the county seat in Collin County. In 2000, just ten years later, the population had increased by over 90,000 turning Plano into one of Dallas’ largest suburbs. According to statistics, nearly 80% of the visitors arriving in Plano are business travelers. Given the sheer number of corporations with headquarters in the city, that figure makes a lot of sense! One of the city’s most recognizable corporate centers is tree-lined Legacy Drive; located between Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. This stretch of Plano is home to many corporate campuses, including J.C. Penney and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, to name a couple. In addition, Plano has its own convention center which is an attractive selling point for organizations and companies looking to host trade shows, conventions, trainings or other such corporate gatherings.
