From 1837 to 1839 the capitol building for the Republic of Texas stood on this site. It became a hotel after the capital was moved to Austin, and was torn down in 1882.President John F. Kennedy ate his last dinner here before he was assassinated in Dallas. This hotel building was host to the 1928 Democratic National Convention. The 18th floor was added in 1950-1951.Takes its name from William Marsh Rice, who is most well known as being the founder of Rice University. The original Rice Hotel, constructed in 1883, was demolished in 1911, and then replaced by the current structure which opened on May 17, 1913.The building's original Rice Hotel Cafeteria was the first air conditioned room in Houston that was open to the public. On August 23, 1977, a court order would force the hotel to close its doors, and the building would remain vacant until 1997 when the process of converting it into loft apartments began. The $27.5 million renovation of the former hotel into apartments served as the springboard for the continuing revitalization of downtown Houston into a lively, vibrant city center.Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
EaDo, in short for East Downtown, only got its name in 2008 through an online public poll. With a growing art and music scene, it is increasingly identified as an up-and-coming neighborhood. This is especially so with the presence of Warehouse Live, a go-to live music venue in the greater Houston metropolitan area.
Something worth noting is its 10-mile hike and bike trail system, Columbia Tap Trail, that runs continuously from Dynamo Stadium to Med Centre; allowing easy commute for people travelling to work. If you are a fan of Star Wars, you might want to check out Neil’s Bahr - a popular spot amongst the locals for its geek-themed Star Wars memorabilia décor.
Businesses looking to lease their office space within an energetic neighborhood can consider starting your search at EaDo.
